Caleb

Good morning and welcome to the International Race of Champions coming to you live from where you get your podcasts. Tonight I am joined. I'm Caleb and I'm joined here with Justin and Gino.

Justin

Yo.

Caleb

And we got a good show for y'all. So let's get started. So first of all, we need to check in with the Glizzy Gladiator of the Great Lakes. And see how much glizzy did you gladiate?

Geno

I mean, if we're going just by numbers since the, since the beginning of the month, we're gonna go with, uh, let's say half of— no, let's say 7. So average 1 a day for the month of July so far.

Caleb

All right, so average 1 glizzy a day. Not too bad, not too bad.

Geno

Went to the, uh, went to the, the Saints game, got the, the Land of 10,000 Calories, uh, split that with some of my friends. That's a beautiful, beautiful thing. It's a— that's, uh, for the uninitiated, that is 6 foot of hot dog topped with mac and cheese, pulled pork, jalapeños, and it's served with French fries. And the good French fries, the battered French fries.

Justin

Oh yeah. Man, I haven't eaten yet and I don't have anything really all that good for dinner.

Caleb

You're, you're just— He's making us hungry, man.

Justin

I'm gonna go out and get a hot dog.

Geno

A lot of times food as a spectacle, they don't make the food good. Not the case here.

Justin

Not, not this time.

Geno

Like, everything was very well made. And honestly, like, at a ball game, like I think it was a little over $100 for that, but 14 people were amply fed off of it. So at a ballgame, I'm gonna say it's the best value in the ballpark.

Caleb

There we go, folks. The land of 10,000 calories. It is worth every single calorie.

Geno

We went, uh, today we went to a place, uh, we went to Lucky Dogs in Bemidji. Gotta Got a hot dog there called Burning Rubber, and it's, uh, topped with chili, hot sauce, jalapeños. Delicious.

Caleb

So the real question is, is it real hot sauce or is it Minnesota hot?

Geno

It could have been hotter, not gonna lie. It's still very good.

Caleb

Could have used a little fire in it.

Geno

Mm-hmm.

Caleb

But then Going on? How's the reservoir report this week?

Justin

It's been raining. It's been storming. I went down to Knoxville for 4th of July, hung out with some friends. That was fun. Didn't really do any car related— oh, this morning I had to take the dog to the vet. And I can report that The Stagia is a 10 out of 10 dog transport.

Caleb

10 out of 10. Perfectly cromulent.

Justin

Yes, more than perfectly cromulent. Over the— on the curve of cromulence, it is hitting an exponential.

Caleb

Ooh. So it's on— yeah, it's on the good side of a bell curve.

Justin

Yes, yes. Now, I mean, right now it's not in per— okay. In its current configuration, I'll give it an 8, maybe a 7. Uh, with proper configuration, it's a 10. I just don't have the, uh, the mesh, uh— oh gosh, what do you call it? There's like a— there's a partition.

Geno

Like a dog gate?

Justin

It's a dog gate. Yeah, it's literally what it's for. So like, that makes it a 10.

Caleb

Not bad, not bad.

Geno

Back when I had the, uh, the Grand Swagonier, That I took down to visit Caleb the one time.

Caleb

Yep, I remember the Grand Wagoneer. That was an awesome vehicle.

Geno

It was real. I was, I was dinking around in the back of her, and, uh, that particular vintage of Volvo station wagon had a dog-like mesh that pulled up out of the back of the seat. It was just a factory option, pulled up out of the back of the seat, clipped to the The roof.

Justin

That's wild. So, um, I mean, I don't know if the Stages is explicitly a dog gate. I mean, it's a, it's a, it's a mesh gate. It doesn't go all the way to the roof. It's just sort of like a half, half height. Um, but it's— so it's, it's just more of a general purpose partition, but it would work perfect for, um, our dog Sherlock, uh, because I needed him closer to up front because he's all wobbly and I wanted to make him like sit down and like if he was going to get flopped around somewhere and if I had a brake hard or something, I wanted to grab onto him and I could because he was right there. But then sometimes without the dog, without the gate, he would walk out to the back and look out the back window. And I mean, he was having a fun time, but I was like, bro, you got to get back up here.

Caleb

Oh, man.

Justin

Because he's old. He's all old and wobbly. So he's just, you know, if he was young, he can, he can deal with himself. But he's old and wobbly.

Geno

Well, whomst among us?

Justin

Yeah. Yeah.

Caleb

Whomst among us has not been a little bit wobbly sometimes? Then I can report from the Acts of DMV department that after passing a rigorous battery of psychological and physical exams, The state of Rio de Janeiro Department of Transit has deemed me fit to drive on Brazilian roads. Hey, congrats.

Geno

Throw in some reggae horns here. Yeah. Yep.

Caleb

I get to, uh, yep. I get to go back for another SAC exam and a physical in 10 years.

Justin

Hey, 10 years.

Caleb

10 years.

Justin

You're, you're good for a minute. You can go, you can go as crazy as you want to be in these next 10 years.

Caleb

Something like that. Something like that. But no, they do. Probably my favorite one of the tests is they make you sit there and draw lines on a piece of paper for 5 minutes to test your ability to focus and concentrate and not get bored out of your fucking mind.

Justin

That's rough. I don't know if I could do that.

Caleb

And oh man. And you know, like the whole pattern matching IQ test thing, they do that too. They give you a damn IQ test to see if you're fit to drive.

Geno

And, uh, that would never work here.

Justin

And sorry, sir, your IQ is too high. We can't give you this license.

Geno

What are you trying to drive? Oh, an Altima. That makes sense.

Caleb

I know someone, bless her heart. She's tr— she tried 6 times and kept getting failed for anxiety on the psych eval.

Geno

Ooh.

Justin

I thought you were going to say, bless her heart, she drives a Nissan Altima.

Caleb

No. Uh, I don't think there would be much driving involved even if she had an Altima.

Justin

Did they even sell the Altima in Brazil?

Caleb

They sold the OG Altima, the one that was a Bluebird. So the good one.

Justin

Yeah. The early '90s one?

Caleb

Yeah.

Justin

Still a little jelly bean though, right?

Caleb

Yeah, the bubble era jelly bean. Yeah. Those were good though. The later ones are— later ones are a little bit rougher.

Justin

Nissan Nissan. Okay, how do— what's the best— what's the best way to put this? Nissan received a traumatic brain injury in 2003, but it didn't fully manifest in psychosis until about the year— anywhere from 2007 to 2013. I, I'd say probably closer to 2013.

Caleb

So Nissan is the RFK Jr. of automakers.

Justin

Yeah, there's a brain worm involved.

Geno

That actually makes a lot of sense.

Justin

Because there was like, they had a big— but like, I think there was, I think they hit their head because there's a big old personality change in about the year 2003, but it didn't come to bite them in the ass until later.

Geno

It is wild that every single thing they make now is ugly too. Like, Even the GT-R, as much of a technical car as it is—

Justin

I don't think the Z is. I don't think the Z is. I like the Z. I think it's a pretty car. I legitimately, fully like the design of it. No notes.

Geno

Hot take, but okay. I haven't liked the Z since the, since the '90s Z.

Caleb

Yeah, um, I'm kind of with Gino on this one. I think the Z32 was the last good Z. I think the current one don't look— it don't look bad, but—

Justin

See, that's— look, this is coming from somebody who has owned a Z. I've owned a Z31, and I think the Z31 is kind of fucking ugly. I think it's cool, it's retro, it's '80s, but it's ugly.

Caleb

Oh, it absolutely is.

Justin

I think the, um, the, the 2 Zs— I think it was 2 the 2 before it, and the 240Z being original, but it was the 240, then the 260, and those were gorgeous.

Caleb

Yeah. And then you had— 280 was okay.

Justin

You had the 280Z, and that which was okay. The 2+2 kind of was ugly. Then you had the 280ZX, which was kind of ugly. And then you had the Z31, which was ugly. Then you had the Z32, which, which is amazing. Z32 is great. I mean, it's— I don't know how— okay, sometimes the way I see cars is they have sort of an emotional— obviously cars have faces and such to a lot of people, right?

Caleb

Right.

Justin

But to me, that also adds to sort of like the emotional aura of the car in a sense. And a Z32, a Z32 to me gives like 2 things. Either way, the person is in like their mid-40s and they're burnt out, but they are either a professional woman who has a lot of wrinkles because she is really like— she has been through a lot, and that's why she's like kind of squinting a little bit. She's like, ugh. Or it's some like some former high school bully who's a little drunk and he's kind of angry. But there's somewhat of sort of a respectable aura to it because they know who they are and you know who they are and they're not bullshitting you. And they honestly, they're still really, at the end of the day, they're still an attractive person physically. So it's like, you see what I'm saying? Anyway.

Caleb

I kind of get where you're coming from. Now, I will say I have a take on the Z33. To me, the Z33 reminds me of, you know, that kind of sleazy high school girls' basketball coach that's a little bit— you know what I'm talking about.

Justin

I know, I know what you're saying, but I'm about to add another layer to it that I think you'll agree with.

Caleb

All right.

Justin

They also run the youth Christian organization at the school that's associated with the sports teams. Mm-hmm.

Caleb

So, the one at my high school, because he drove a Z33, bless his heart. In his case, he was the school's IT director.

Justin

But, yeah, it's not that bad. See, the thing is, the type of person, see, the thing is, is I'm not describing the type of person who drives the car. The type of person who drives a Z32 or a Z33, we can get into that. And I think you were saying part of that. Well, what I'm sort of saying is, if the car was a human being, who would they be?

Caleb

Ooh, yeah.

Justin

That's what I was describing with the Z32. It was— I was personifying— I was personifying the car.

Caleb

I kind of think the personification and the people who drove Z33s new are pretty similar.

Justin

Now, now, now, at the same time, the people who drive it can absolutely influence the personification of the car. But I feel at this point with the Z32, it's so old. It was before my time. I don't remember who would have bought it new. I can imagine, but I don't have that association. The only association I have with it at this point is from younger car enthusiasts. So I'm going to disregard that and just look at the car as what aura does it give in terms of its face, in terms of its vibe, in terms of its— in its time compared to the other cars in its that it was competing with. The Supra was like curvy, right? The 300ZX was like athletic but heavy, so sort of like a rugby player but also kind of curvy. Um, not the 300ZX, the, um, why can't I think of the name? The, the 3— the 3000GT.

Caleb

The GT.

Justin

Yeah, yeah, it was thick but also athletic, right? Um, And, um, and but like kind of curvy and like muscular at the same time. Um, the 300ZX is sort of like a brute. Like, it wasn't sexy, it was like angry, but not, not curvy.

Caleb

It's like the linebacker on the football team. Yeah, but, but like very fast in a straight line and it can turn. But at the same time, it'll also punch its way through just about anything.

Justin

I think it feels serious, but at the same— like, the external design, the vibe of the car, the suspension, the design, etc., feels serious, but then the engine feels like a tractor engine. So I don't know what kind of person that would be. Like, they're like a serious professional person, but like, at heart, they're like a farm girl or something. Like, I don't know.

Geno

I'm just going to go with— I'm coming back to this point. You could buy it with T-tops and that makes it better.

Caleb

This is true.

Justin

So it's slutty.

Geno

Yes. The Z33, I always just thought was goofy looking. And I think my feelings on the Z33 have extended to the following 2 generations.

Justin

Yeah, it's— yeah, I, I've never really felt a huge draw towards them, but I have a lot of— I think over the years I'm finding more and more appreciation for them just as, as traditional rear-wheel drive, naturally aspirated sports cars.

Geno

I have a— so I have a lot of affection for them as transmission donors for better cars.

Justin

Yeah, and like, I do have like a lot of formative like Z experiences in terms of the '33 and the '34. Um, my, uh, when I was growing up, um, the few years I lived in Ohio when I was growing up, when I was a kid, um, which cemented my car enthusiasm because my across-the-street neighbor had a Tri-Five Chevy, and in the beautiful show, show car, um, my up-the-street neighbor had a Cobra kit car, Shelby Cobra kit car, classic blue and white, blue with white stripes, as it should.

Caleb

Mm-hmm.

Justin

And my 2 doors down neighbor had a brand new bright or whatever, like a nice blue 350Z. I forget what blue that is. It's not super dark, but it's also not super bright. It's just a straight up in the middle blue. It's beautiful. And I, and I thought, and I was, I thought very highly of that car. at the time. As time went on and I grew up, you know, was like a teenager car enthusiast, I kind of lost respect for the car, even though it was sort of like— when I was playing like Need for Speed and stuff, I didn't— it wasn't my favorite. Um, growing up even more especially, I started like hating on VQs because it's funny to hate on VQs because they do sound kind of—

Caleb

um, yeah, it's a VQ.

Justin

But they are great motors, they just sound like trash.

Caleb

Oh yeah.

Justin

Um, and, uh, but now, like I said, now that I've— I'm older, I've matured, um, I'm taking away some of that reactionariness to the car, and I'm thinking about it in its own— as its own thing. I don't— especially the Z33, I really like the way it looked. Um, and I kind of— I kind of— they've kind of— they've grown on me. They've grown, especially that early 2000— or 2003 to 2007-ish Nissan sort of blocky design, like the round design, but then they had those like, um, indents and all their stuff that had like blocks. Like this, like the, the rear strut tower bar had like that, that pattern in it.

Geno

Yeah.

Justin

The fucking— the next, the second generation Stagea had that all over it. Like think Infiniti G35, that all that era of Nissan stuff. I kind of actually have an appreciation for at this point. It's actually held up pretty well design-wise. At the time, I didn't love it.

Geno

Looking, looking at the picture of the Z33, it's not a bad-looking car, but whoever was responsible for those door handles should be beaten about the head.

Justin

No, and the, the, the, the door handles, I don't know, I think they're cool. I'm gonna defend them.

Caleb

I mean, that's fine.

Geno

You can do it. Like, you know, I'm sure John Wayne Gacy was a good clown too, you know.

Justin

Goddamn it. That was good. That was good. Okay, wait. So the Z34, I have a foundational connection with because one of my good car friends when I was in high school, Um, he had a baby blue Z34 and he passed away. Uh, he crashed it and passed away. So, uh, yeah, that was sort of like— I think of whenever I see a Z34, especially in that baby blue color or French racing blue, kind of almost, I think of him. So I do like— I do have like connections to the cars. I do like the cars. And like I said, as like a thing.

Caleb

Yeah.

Justin

They're fantastic on paper, and I'm sure they're a lot of fun to drive. I've driven a, like, a drift spec Z33 once, actually. Actually, now that I— it had a, it had a slipping clutch, so I didn't— couldn't go crazy, but the thing was such a go-kart. It was so much fun. Okay, now I take it back. I can't hate. I kind of want a Z33 now. Shit, I've convinced myself.

Geno

No, no go-kart car will ever impress me now that I've driven an A1 S2000.

Justin

Okay, I haven't driven an S2000, but I've driven an— I've driven an NA and an NB Miata, both with coilovers. I've driven a, um, a 240SX on coilovers, and I've driven, um, that, that Z33 on coilovers. And there— I mean, in terms of— I didn't go crazy with any of them, so they felt all similar, but I love that go-kart sort of There's nothing that compares to bouncing off a rev limiter at 9,000 RPMs. I need to drive an S2000. Have you driven an NSX?

Geno

No, I would love to drive an NSX.

Justin

Okay, I'm going to employ some one-upmanship and be an asshole and say, well, I've driven an NSX.

Geno

Oh, man, let's see.

Justin

The most recent thing. First gen. First gen NSX, and it was manual. As God intended.

Caleb

I can one-up both of y'all because I have driven the rarest modern Honda, which was built on the assembly line by hand alongside the NSX. The ZE1 Insight.

Justin

Okay.

Caleb

Total production, 17,000 of these things. across 6 years.

Geno

Dang.

Justin

Insights are fricking cool.

Caleb

It was built on the same line as the NSX. I didn't know that.

Justin

That's wild.

Caleb

In the same colors as the NSX.

Justin

Even that bronze?

Caleb

They did not offer the bronze by that point, but the Insight color selection was limited to NSX options. Except for the green.

Justin

I was about to say, wait, somebody should paint an NSX in that green then.

Caleb

Somebody should. And NSX seats will bolt into an Insight.

Justin

That's crazy.

Geno

Although in a more cursed way, Insight seats will bolt into an NSX.

Justin

All right, so are we, are we Insight swapping an NSX or are we NSX swapping an Insight?

Caleb

Yeah. Ooh, that's a tough question.

Justin

And if we're NSX swapping the Insight, it's mid-engine.

Caleb

Oh yeah, of course. I mean, so yeah, there's, there's my one-upmanship. I have owned an Insight.

Justin

All I have to say is, for every single person out there, y'all, but anyone listening, if you ever have the chance, or if you ever can go out of your way to get the chance to drive a first-generation NSX, especially a manual one, And especially if you're in a situation where you're allowed to kind of send it a little bit. I know it's known for its handling, so, you know, enjoy that a little bit. Don't go too crazy, especially if it's not your car. But make sure you— make sure you do a pull through second, like first, second, third on an on-ramp or something, because I don't know how to describe it, but it's a spiritual experience. I've driven a V10 R8 and that was amazing. But even then, I don't know why, but that damn V6 sounds so good and it feels like you're hitting warp speed with that car. It feels so much faster than it is. It feels like you're Star Wars freaking hitting light speed. I don't know. It's insane. It's so cool. It's such a cool car. It is a spiritual experience to drive one. I don't know what they did to that damn thing, but it's voodoo magic. Everyone needs to drive one.

Geno

Honda really put the care and attention into every aspect of like those special cars. The NSX, like every detail inside the factory is tuned so perfectly. Like, I can't— like driving my friend's S2000, I can't imagine an aftermarket exhaust that would sound better. Like anything you changed would would make the car less than it is.

Justin

They are truly, uh, they are truly more than the sum of their parts. Like, on paper, they're the perfect car to be like, well, on paper they're not all that good. Fucking drive it.

Caleb

Yeah, I mean, and y'all know I am a— I am the world's biggest inside advocate.

Justin

Yeah.

Caleb

Like, that is my role on this podcast, is to evangelize the Insight.

Justin

Did you see that one YouTuber guy put a Harbor Freight Predator in an Insight?

Caleb

Yeah, I did. But no joke though, hon, like even the Insight Honda, the bits that you touch and the controls are perfect.

Geno

It's, it's almost like the anti-Viper where they're just like, where the car is like, you look at the Viper, the car itself gorgeous, the engine Insane. The fit and finish, it's a neon.

Justin

Yeah, somehow the Viper is less than the sum of its parts, but that doesn't— but like, it doesn't matter. It could be literally a frame and a V10 engine and you're having the same experience, and that's a fantastic experience.

Geno

Like, it'll, it'll shove you through the back of the seat.

Justin

Yes, yes. It, it like overcompensates with how crazy it is. It doesn't need to be good in any other capacity. It's got a V10. Fuck you.

Geno

Interior, we don't need that. We're a Dodge Viper.

Justin

Yeah, yeah. So it does the job in an entirely different philosophy, but the job is still done by both cars, which is, that was fun.

Caleb

Of course, my other weird insight factoid I will drop on y'all Honda, in their infinite wisdom, used the same steering wheel on the Insight and the S2000.

Justin

Good.

Caleb

And an S2000 gauge cluster will drop right into an Insight. Good.

Justin

Make it rev to 9K.

Caleb

Uh, that's what the K-swap people do.

Geno

With a tach that goes to 9K.

Caleb

Uh, we call that, uh, K-Sight owners.

Justin

Yeah, what's the stock engine in an Insight? And how's the transmission? How's all that work? Because I know it's a hybrid, but you got a manual.

Caleb

So, so the way the Honda system works, um, I'm going to reach conveniently behind my laptop real quick and get my—

Justin

I baked this earlier—

Caleb

my 1:43 scale New Formula Red Insight model.

Justin

That's insightful.

Caleb

Quite insightful. So the way the IMA system works on the first-gen Insight and the CR-Z and the first-gen Civic Hybrid is you have your motor. In the case of Insight, it's a little 3-cylinder, 990-something cc thing. You know, good long stroke, short, small bore. So really torquey off the bottom end.

Justin

Yeah, that's what my girlfriend says.

Caleb

And then paired with this behind that—

Geno

Is that why he lives in Canada?

Justin

Yeah. Ex-girlfriend, sorry.

Caleb

And then you have a little pancake electric motor that is mounted to the back of the motor, basically. And then coming off that pancake electric motor is your flywheel and your clutch and your manual transmission.

Justin

Okay, so it's more of an electric assist to the combustion.

Caleb

Exactly.

Justin

Interesting. So it's like an e-bike.

Caleb

Exactly. That's exactly what it is.

Justin

Except instead of you, it's a motor.

Geno

It's such a weird setup. Like the Say what you will about the driving experience on them, but the Toyota, the Synergy Hybrid Drive is such a brilliant system.

Justin

Yeah.

Caleb

Yes.

Geno

And how it works. And like, Honda's just like, motor, engine, bam!

Justin

Put them together. That sounds almost Italian. No, no, no, no. Cut that out. That's almost—

Caleb

So the brilliance of the Honda system. Is you get the joy of a Honda manual transmission with it.

Geno

Yeah, that's nice.

Justin

It's true though.

Geno

Honda knows how to make a manual. I've never shifted a nicer manual than an Honda. And that includes that SL55 Benz I ripped around in one night when I was a valet. Yeah.

Justin

Yeah, I'm trying to think of a notchier, better manual I've driven, and all the Hondas that I've ever driven Well, not all of them. I've driven some with completely wrecked bushings, but any of the Hondas that are in good shape that I've driven, yeah.

Caleb

Yep. And one of the joys of the Insight is a Prelude short shifter kit works on the Insight.

Justin

Okay, but what if you made the 3-cylinder in the Insight rev to 9K?

Caleb

I mean, Yeah, she's already running out of steam at 6.

Justin

Yeah, it revs to 9K. Sure, it only makes 30 horsepower at 9K, but, but it's there. It's there.

Caleb

Yeah, they spinning.

Justin

That's what the electric motor's for.

Caleb

Yep, spinner. Yeah, I got the electric motor spinning up in that Up 9,000. So since Gino is the only one here that spent some time in an S2000 though, and talking about the 9,000, when you were taking it to redline, did you yell, it's over 9,000 when you crossed the 9K threshold?

Geno

Well, see, that's where you get the fuel cut.

Caleb

So no. Yeah.

Justin

I was going to say, did you hit the fuel cut?

Geno

Like it just bounced off the rev limiter at 9,000. It was like, oh, all right, time to shift.

Justin

You're just like, all right, first gear.

Geno

Yep.

Justin

I'm not, I'm not gonna shift. Oh, it's gonna stay here all day. That's fine, it's fine. If it was a rotary, I'd like it.

Geno

Yeah, no, see, until it puked the apex seals.

Caleb

You know, as an FC owner, the driving experience was like Beep beep beep beep. Fine, I'll shift.

Justin

You know, it's completely random, but the Stagea beeps when you put it in reverse. Not the outside, the inside. Oh, oh Lord. It has saved my ass a couple of times, but it's, it's obnoxious when you have to reverse for a long period of time.

Caleb

Ooh, I can only imagine.

Justin

It's just beep beep beep beep beep beep beep. It's like, at least it doesn't have a speed chime.

Caleb

Ooh, that would suck.

Geno

Oh man, that would suck on American roads. As the owner of multiple 240s, we can talk about annoying chimes. That 240 door chime, I think the first one I bought, one of the first things I did was figure out where that was under the dash and rip it out and throw it as far as I could.

Justin

Oh, we were talking about Z31s. You know, in the fancy Z31s, you open the door and it's like it has a computer robot voice. It's like, door open.

Geno

Didn't the, uh, didn't the SVX do that as well?

Caleb

I think so.

Geno

I don't know.

Caleb

And Wasn't it the Chryslers that went, the door is ajar?

Justin

Yeah.

Caleb

No, the door is a door. The door is not ajar.

Geno

Are you stupid?

Justin

The Chryslers had more of a robot voice. I actually think the Nissans, if I remember correctly, actually it's less of a robot voice. I think it was just a recording of someone's voice just played over and over. I think it was on like a tiny record.

Caleb

Yeah, it was a mini record player.

Geno

There was one of them that was basically a tiny little phonograph.

Caleb

Yeah.

Geno

That would do that. That was built into the vehicle. Wild shit.

Caleb

It was good though, man. Yeah, the, uh, oh man, I miss, I miss when cars were interesting.

Geno

Yeah, it was the, that was the 200SX or the Z of that same era.

Caleb

Yeah, and I think the Mazda—

Justin

I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna argue that cars are still interesting. Just not in the American market and maybe not the Brazilian market.

Caleb

I don't know. We still have some— we still got some interesting weird ones here.

Justin

So you still got some stuff in Brazil. I would say the car markets in the rest of the world that were previously underdeveloped, that's where the interesting cars are now. China, Vietnam. Not, not interesting in a good way with Vietnam, unfortunately for them.

Geno

Malaysia.

Justin

What other countries are making some weird cars these days? Just all of these markets that were underdeveloped. A lot of them are coming out of the woodwork, especially China, of course. And, you know, some of the weirdest, quirkiest, strangest cars I've ever seen are coming out of China. So there's some cool stuff. It's just we don't— we don't get it here. Yeah.

Caleb

And I've spent some time recently in some Chinese cars because I have yet to purchase something down here.

Justin

Do they sell Chinese cars there?

Caleb

Oh yeah. Huh.

Justin

I thought— so even with Brazil's market being protectionist, Chinese cars, they're still, uh, they're cheap enough, I would guess.

Caleb

BYD and Chery and Changan and GAC, so Great Wall. They have all built plants here or are in the process of building plants here.

Justin

Oh, sick.

Caleb

And the Brazilian government was kind of— the way they did this, I gotta give them props. They were like, okay, you can bring your Chinese market vehicles in on the condition that you stand up an operational factory to supply the Brazilian market.

Justin

Yeah, yeah, you can come in, get your groundwork, get your dealers built out, start building cars. Yeah, that's smart.

Caleb

And but yeah, like, I see Geelys all the time. About half the Ubers I take are BYDs now.

Justin

Oh yeah, you did send something. See, I just totally forgot.

Caleb

Then I had a JAC, took a JAC as a Uber to when we went and saw the Supergirl movie a couple of weeks ago. Great movie. Awesome soundtrack, by the way.

Justin

What about the car?

Caleb

The car? Uh, I would have liked it better if the seatbelt hadn't been stuck up on my side. So, but the car itself, I mean—

Justin

Are we going to, are we going to blame Uber? Are we going to blame the build quality?

Caleb

This car led a hard life. The shocks were blown on it. So it was a little bouncy back there with no seatbelt and, you know, head bouncing off ceiling here and there.

Justin

But were they playing any music?

Caleb

We're not playing any music.

Justin

Okay. See, music choices of Uber drivers is always intriguing to me. Maybe I should, every time I take an Uber, if they're playing music, maybe I should write down what they're playing.

Caleb

Yeah. Like here, most, yeah, here most of them are on the JB 99.9, which that's just, it's basically '70s through 2000s rock music. You know, a bit of American rock, bit of Brazilian rock.

Geno

Just.

Justin

That checks out.

Caleb

Yeah. Good rock music. Good stuff, man. The, uh, when I went to the, uh, when I went to Detran, uh, you know, to kick off the paperwork process and, uh, get the paperwork that says I could go and get my physical, the guy was listening to like wildest kind of right-wing macho talk, borderline misogynistic talk radio. I was like, good Lord.

Geno

Yeah.

Caleb

This is what they have on the talk radio here. Like, this is worse than my country.

Geno

That's tough to do.

Justin

Is Bolsonaro still in Florida?

Caleb

No, he is currently in jail in Brazil.

Justin

Oh yeah, that's right. That's right.

Caleb

Good. Now he's got one of his kids is in Texas, you know, living on the grift. The other one's running for president. Of course, I'm getting ready to go to car shop and all that. And, uh, you know, I think it— so I've been sending the wife links to things. Hey, you know, what do you think of this, honey? You know, darling, what do you think of that? And, uh, good news is we've narrowed it down to 2 that she likes. Well enough for me to go look at. So I have narrowed it— we've narrowed it down to within the city of Rio. We found a '95 Mitsubishi Lancer, not an Evo.

Justin

We could change that.

Caleb

It is a manual.

Justin

Okay.

Caleb

And the other one that we found that we both like is a '99 C20 Xsara, the Xsara thing they did. So again, this is going back to, you know, your Gran Turismo 2 days, you know.

Justin

I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to vote Citroën every time.

Caleb

You know, funny. Cause that's the way my wife voted too. Out of the two, she likes it better. All right. Oh my gosh, he likes the color.

Geno

I'm just gonna go with the flow then. Hop on that bandwagon.

Caleb

And, uh, so yeah, it's looking very likely we're gonna be having a French— we here at the International Race of Champions are going to have yet another French car in the fleet.

Justin

Somehow I predict That some insane circumstance is going to happen that is going to require you to purchase a Dodge Durango. This is the tarot card that I just pulled.

Geno

Oh boy, I did, uh, I did ball joints on one of those once, and, uh, I'm not in any hurry to repeat that experience.

Caleb

The Durango is a life choice.

Justin

That's— yeah, yeah.

Caleb

And I say this knowing that one of my neighbors has a chud friend who drives a blacked-out V8 Durango with the, you know, the blacked-out American flag decals.

Justin

Yeah.

Caleb

Yeah. This chud has one of them in the, on the backside winders.

Justin

In Brazil?

Caleb

In Brazil.

Justin

In Brazil?

Caleb

And then this joker's got the Punisher skull. I mean, this is a really, really excellent American chud cosplay. Let me tell you what.

Justin

And God bless America.

Caleb

God bless America. And I am 99.9% sure I know the way this guy votes too.

Justin

Are you sure he isn't just cosplaying ironically?

Caleb

Given the demographics of my HOA, I lean toward not cosplay.

Justin

Do you think he's actually an American?

Caleb

I do not know.

Justin

Or is it some, or is it some America boo?

Caleb

Oh, we have lots of America boo here. And you can usually tell which side of the political aisle they're on because they make it obvious.

Justin

Well, that sounds pretty American to me.

Caleb

I keep telling my wife our 2 countries have way more in common than they don't. She gets offended by that because it's usually after seeing some sort of Bolsonaro supporter.

Justin

I mean, it's true though. Uh, we're, we're sort of like, uh, we are fraternal twins separated at birth.

Caleb

Yeah, I mean, we really kind of are. And on the more positive cultural alignments though, uh, the food. So I no longer find myself quite as homesick for Tennessee cooking after living here. Yeah.

Justin

But what about the barbecue?

Caleb

Yeah. Don't really have the pulled pork, the slow cooking here. Unfortunately, I need to work on introducing that.

Justin

What about the glizzies?

Caleb

Do have glizzies. So the Brazilian style glizzy.

Justin

I love how we've all collectively just— everybody has just been like, yeah, we should call them glizzies. Actually, that's— everyone has decided this. Yeah, I love it.

Caleb

This is collective.

Justin

This was— this literally— this started as like COVID-era TikTok slang, and now everyone and their fucking mom is like, yeah, glizzy is the perfect name for a hot dog. I, I mean, I agree, but it's just hilarious. It is very funny.

Geno

At least, uh, at least my mother hasn't started saying back shots yet.

Justin

No, no, no, no, no, there's shit like that that's starting to happen though. Um, and, and then the other thing that's crazy is that, um, you know, it's COVID-era fucking TikTok slang that fucking Gen Z picked up, but at the same time it came from fucking slang for a fucking Glock. Like, glizzy means a fucking Glock. It's a gun.

Geno

It is very funny.

Justin

It's great.

Geno

So what I'm hearing is we need to have a tactical hot dog holster.

Justin

Yes, we need to have an extended mag hot dog. A footlong with a switch.

Geno

You know, you start saying footlong switch, we're gonna have a whole different kind of podcast.

Justin

Damn, it's not even Pride Month anymore.

Caleb

No, man. So a Brazilian glizzy is cooked in kind of a—

Geno

It's got a little strip of hair above it, right?

Justin

Or is it, or has it been, or has it been, uh, has it been artificially plumped with injections? I'm sorry, Brazil. I'm sorry. Don't come for me.

Caleb

We're gonna be at y'all's hearts if we ever come to visit.

Geno

We're getting stopped at the border for this one.

Caleb

No, man. So it's cooked in kind of a—

Justin

Lula's in the background just shaking his head.

Geno

Man. I can't stop making jokes, but I actually do want to hear about this hot dog.

Justin

Me too, me too. I'm sorry, I'm done.

Caleb

No worries. So it's cooked in kind of a tomato sauce. You put your hot dog in with a little bit of tomato sauce. And then you put your ground beef on top of it. And then your potatoes. And then your corn. And then your, like, you know, like the little potato straw things? Like you put on a casserole?

Justin

Yeah.

Caleb

Yeah, put those on top.

Justin

Wait, wait, potato straws or onion straws?

Caleb

Potato.

Justin

Okay.

Geno

Like shoestring potatoes?

Caleb

Yeah, shoestring potatoes, that's it.

Justin

Like, or are they like the dried potato?

Caleb

It's like a potato chip, but—

Justin

Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know what you're talking about. Yeah.

Caleb

Yeah. So you cover it in those and then you try to eat this thing and you end up with a, just a standard Brazilian hot dog weighs like 2.5, 3 pounds.

Justin

Is it, is it a beef hot dog generally?

Caleb

So generally it's a, it's either beef or beef and pork.

Justin

Okay.

Caleb

There's always some beef in though.

Justin

Always some beef. And no chicken hot dogs.

Caleb

No, we don't have that heresy here.

Justin

Good.

Caleb

And you actually use like, you know, like the mini baguettes from the bakery.

Geno

Yeah.

Caleb

Yeah. That's what you put it on. Because a normal hot dog bun don't have the substance to hold it.

Justin

So somebody, somebody needs to explain to me why American hot dog specialty places that are popping up all over the place haven't done a Brazilian dog because I haven't seen one.

Geno

Man, move up here. We'll start a hot dog place.

Justin

Let's do it.

Caleb

Let's do it.

Justin

Um, the— oh, we could call it, because it's in Minnesota, so it's cold, we could call it, um, the Glizzard.

Caleb

Ooh.

Justin

We could also serve ice cream, I guess.

Caleb

Yep. Needs ice cream. You need ice cream. The Minnesota Glizzard.

Geno

Sounds too much like a gizzard though, which I'm all for eating because they're delicious.

Caleb

Absolutely, 100%.

Geno

Like a fried— nothing like a good fried gizzard.

Caleb

I know, right?

Justin

I actually haven't had one.

Geno

Remedy that situation at your earliest convenience.

Caleb

So I was trying to explain the joy of fried chicken livers. To friends here. And I mean, you know, folks eat liver and onions here, so it ain't that far of a stretch. But the thought of, wait, you batter it like you do fried chicken and you deep fry it. The thought of just deep frying a liver didn't compute for some reason.

Geno

I've never seen those. I do. I've got a, I got a whole lot of chicken livers saved in the freezer that I'll probably do like a liver pâté with at some point.

Caleb

So there was one Popeyes in Leavenworth that used— that had fried livers.

Justin

Really? A Popeyes?

Caleb

Really? A Popeyes.

Geno

In the stockade?

Caleb

In, uh, no, in the town of Leavenworth. And, uh, man, they were good. And then, uh, there's a local chicken chain down there in Kansas City. That's— they also have real good fried livers and gizzards. And I don't remember the name of it, but it's the OG location's on State Street in Kansas City, Kansas. And then they got one at 51st and Troost in KC Mo. So right around 51st and Troost. And stop in there, get you an order of livers and gizzards.

Geno

Yeah, I might have to do that next time I'm down that way.

Justin

I mean, traditionally does not sound appetizing, but I'm willing to try it.

Caleb

Yeah, but I'm a sucker for good livers though.

Justin

That's no alcohol.

Caleb

No alcohol.

Justin

Teetotaler.

Geno

Yep. That's, that's this podcast.

Caleb

Yeah.

Justin

Is, is it this podcast? I don't think so.

Geno

A reference to a cheap beer in the name?

Justin

Yeah, this is a vehemently, uh, anti-alcohol podcast.

Caleb

Yep, absolutely zero alcohol is drunk on this pod.

Justin

No novelty beverages.

Caleb

None at all.

Geno

We did actually stop by— there's a, uh, there's an NA bottle shop up here called Mississippi.

Caleb

Oh.

Geno

And we did stop in. They got some neat things. And as I'm getting older, I'm like, you know, I should probably drink slightly less.

Caleb

Yeah.

Justin

Yeah.

Caleb

I mean, that's part of why I've adopted the, uh, zero alcohol one for at least editing days.

Justin

I'm drinking for the podcast.

Geno

Do it for the gram.

Justin

Do it. I'm doing it for the gram. I feel like if I ever do disappoint myself and develop an, an, an unkickable alcohol addiction, I think at that point there's only one option, and that's to move to Wisconsin.

Geno

Yeah, it'll just look normal there.

Justin

Yeah, I won't have to feel bad about it then.

Caleb

And gentlemen, I believe that is a pod.

Geno

I think you're right.

Caleb

All right, so we got any last word for our listeners?

Geno

Team lift if you feel like you need to. That's my advice.

Justin

Oh, that's good advice.

Caleb

That's real good advice.

Justin

Uh, take a deep breath and don't forget to check your oil.

Caleb

Probably low.
